Luxury vinyl tiles versus the real thing

Designed to emulate stone or ceramic tiles, Luxury vinyl tiles provide the ceramic and concrete look that people often pay tens of thousands for. They are designed to emulate stone or ceramic tiles. Luxury vinyl tiles are designed to emulate stone or ceramic tile. Today vinyl has become more realistic and attractive that some people struggle to see the difference between high-quality luxury vinyl tiles and the real thing. LVT's come in a beautiful range of colours and textures that look and feel like authentic stone or ceramic tiles.

Luxury vinyl planks gives you the wood look flooring that closely resembles wooden planks in both colour and texture. Texture often includes embossing which makes it appear even more realistic. When it comes to installation, vinyl planks can be placed in any direction just as you would with wood, with the added advantage of being able to add borders and other design features.

Both luxury vinyl tiles and luxury vinyl planks are incredibly soft and warm to walk on. The comfort of vinyl is one of the biggest attractions, as stone, ceramic and wood can be cold and hard underfoot. Luxury vinyl tiles and luxury vinyl planks are also more durable than the real thing because they are less prone to chips and scratches. Some types of flooring don’t withstand moisture well, yet both luxury vinyl tiles and luxury vinyl planks can be placed practically anywhere.

The difference between vinyl and laminate flooring

Many customers often get LVT's and laminate flooring mixed up. Luxury vinyl planks look like wood but are actually made up of a clear pure PVC wear surface, a print layer and a PVC and/or Fiberglass backing.

The thickness of the wear surface also indicates its suitability for different levels of commercial use; the entry level LVTs have an 0.3mm wear surface - this could be used in a ladies dress shop for example. An 0.5m wear surface is suitable for heavy commercial use - ie a supermarket. An 0.7 wear surface usually combines the best of appearance with high durability. Laminate flooring usually has a melamine mineral surface, with a high density fibreboard backing.

The surface is more scratch resistant, however the backing is susceptible to swelling and peaking at the joins caused by moisture and changes in humidity. Laminates are usually installed loose (click together) over a foam underlay. This means that the surface doesn't need to be as smooth as it does for LVTs, however LVTs can be installed on floors that aren't level. LVTs can also have added design elements such as complimentary borders.

Another option is SPC flooring, which is the same as LVTs but installed differently. The planks click together rather than being glued to the floor.
