Choose from multiple carpet styles when replacing carpet and buying new carpet
Although there are many different carpet names, there are only two types of carpet – cut pile and loop pile. The different names you may have heard about refer to how the carpet is constructed and the attributes they have. The easiest way to understand the different styles is to come into the store to look at and feel the carpets.
The team at Manukau-based carpet retailers Flooring First do their best to match your preferences to the products in-store and can show and explain the following styles:
Cut pile twist
Cut pile plush
Texture
Loop pile
Sisal
Level
Shag pile
Differences between the basic carpet fibres
Although the type of fibre shouldn't be the only factor to consider when making your selection, it is a very important one. Nylon, wool, polypropylene, / new generation polypropylene, polyester and triexta are the main carpet fibres and each has its strengths and drawbacks. Choosing which carpet is best for you depends on your priorities.
Polypropylene, also known as olefin, is commonly used for outdoor carpet / artificial grass, budget commercial flooring or low cost "tough and cheap" carpet for rental properties. Polypropylene carpet is cost effective, hard-wearing, easy to clean and perfect for high traffic areas. Polypropylene has a high resistance to sunlight and moisture and is almost impossible to stain. Depending on the pile cut, the downside of polypropylene includes being more susceptible to matting, crushing and scuffs and soiling (ground in dirt). It is also quite coarse in texture.
Carpet manufacturers are constantly researching ways to improve the yarns they use. New generation polypropylene fibre is the result of a lot of money spent on R&D to improve the performance and reduce the negative aspects of generic polypropylene carpet. This has produced a low cost / high performing fibre with excellent stain / soil resistance and appearance retention properties. They are most commonly manufactured as a heavy weight carpet and have independently tested performance ratings comparable to many of the nylon / triexter carpets costing considerably more.
Polyester offers exceptional softness and colour clarity. It is also naturally stain and fade resistant. Despite polyester not being as inherently resilient as nylon, carpets made of polyester fibre do perform well if properly constructed (ie high density / heavy weight). Carpets of polyester are generally available only in cut pile styles and are usually less expensive than nylon in comparable weights. They are popular with builders as an attractive low cost carpet with the "wow factor" however they have poor long term appearance retention.
Triexta could be described as a "new generation polyester" - it is constructed of various compounds including polyester and a polymer made of corn starch. Although it is not solution dyed, triexta has permanent stain resistant / stain repellent properties. Its dyeing method also means that a greater variety of carpet colours can be economically produced. For an interesting article about triexta click here.
Found in cut pile and loop pile styles, nylon is one of the most versatile in terms of performance. Although more expensive than other synthetic fibres, nylon is durable, resilient and easy to dye giving a huge range of carpet colour options. Most nylon carpets on the market are "solution dyed" which means that the dye is added "in solution" - before it's extruded. This makes it excellent for stain resistance as the dye is an integral part of the yarn - diluted bleach is one of the things that can be used to remove stubborn stains! Other solution dyed fibres; polyester, polypropylene. Many nylon carpets are available in a "soft touch" form - this means that the fibre is produced finer (higher denier) - it's like the difference between adult hair and baby hair.
If you are after carpet that will withstand the test of time and value an attractive "organic" looking carpet, choose wool. Wool has natural resilience and its durability enables it to last for many years without showing signs of wear. Wool has a natural ability to resist stains and is naturally flame retardant. Wool absorbs moisture and VOCs Wool is the most resilient fibre. Due to the wool dying process, the colour is fade-resistant – unless exposed to direct sunlight. Wool carpet comes in a range of styles, patterns and colours. If you suffer from asthma a wool carpet is the ideal choice, provided the air is dry inside your home and you regularly care for your carpet.
Five tips for buying new carpet from the experts at Flooring First Manukau
Take your time – Choosing new carpet for your home or business isn’t something to rush. Make sure you ask plenty of questions from the Flooring First Manukau team including how to care for your carpet.
Put carpet performance ahead of fibres – Although each fibre does have different characteristics, how the fibre is constructed plays a more important part in carpet performance and suitability.
Consider the future – How long do you want your carpet to last for? If you have a long-term goal, it is worth paying more for higher quality, than opting for a cheaper product that you may regret later.
Don’t be swayed by emotion – It is easy to get caught up in an array of styles, colours and patterns. Remember to put function first if durability and stain-resistance are important to you.
Seek qualified advice – The knowledgeable team at Flooring First Manukau is here to give you advice for your circumstances. To avoid any problems, only proven, good quality carpet brands that offer after-sale support are stocked.
